Reading, Phonics and Spelling

At Wirksworth Church of England Infant School we teach the foundations for reading and writing during daily phonics lessons. The school follows 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' which is a systematic synthetic phonics program. The teaching of phonics is intended to help children to read and spell by teaching the skills of blending to read and segmenting to spell. Although phonics is taught during daily discrete phonics sessions, this learning is continually applied and reinforced throughout other areas of the curriculum.

Reading development in school is supported by 'Big Cat Collins' which ensures a secure start to every child's reading journey. It helps children progress from decoding words to reading fluently and for pleasure with fully decodable books aligned to 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds'.

As a school we are proud to be working in partnership with St Wilfred's English Hub supporting our school to enabling chidren to become lifelong readers through;

  • Reading for Pleasure
  • Effective Phonics Teaching
  • Early Language Development
